The chalet is named after Niska Bridge in Halkosaari, Lappajärvi. In 1979, 1,200 local residents built an illegal dam there in protest. A convoy of tractors stretching over a kilometer unloaded stones into the water for three hours.
The rebellion was sparked by water regulation that had lowered the lake level too much, weakening water quality. The locals are known here as stubborn and determined people who stand firmly behind what they believe is right. No one was ever convicted, as none of those questioned could recall how they had learned about the dam project.
Today, the Niska dam stone and its commemorative plaque remain as a reminder of this unique act of local resistance.
